Verdict: the Breville VIN401 DiamondXpress gives you a lot of iron for budget money: 3100W, 70g/min of continuous steam, a 200g shot, a 400ml tank and a 3m cord, with a wide diamond-ceramic soleplate that owners say glides well. Argos shoppers rate it 4.6 out of 5 across more than 2,000 reviews. The catch is reliability. Breville only gives a 1-year guarantee, and reviews on Breville’s own site are dominated by complaints about sticking, leaking and steam failing after a year or so. If you want the same steam figures with a 2-year guarantee and a far better owner record, the Russell Hobbs Powersteam Ultra 20630 is the safer buy for similar money.
The DiamondXpress has been on sale since 2017 and is still one of the best-selling steam irons at Amazon UK, Argos and Currys. It stands out for two reasons: the white and rose-gold styling, and steam figures that match irons costing twice as much. This review explains what it does well, why opinion on it is so split, and which models to consider instead. It is not in our best steam irons guide, and the reliability record is why.
A note on the two very different ratings you will see. At Argos it scores 4.6 out of 5 from about 2,200 reviews. On Breville’s own website it scores 2.8 out of 5 from about 100. Retailer reviews are mostly written in the first weeks of ownership, while people tend to go to the manufacturer’s site when something has gone wrong, so neither figure is the whole picture. We have used both.

How we chose these picks
We compared the manufacturers’ published specifications, independent UK tests and reviews (including Breville UK DiamondXpress VIN401 product page, Argos listing and owner reviews for the Breville VIN401, owner reviews on Breville's website and at Amazon UK), and recurring themes in verified owner reviews. We checked that every product was on sale in the UK when this page was last updated, and we re-check stock every month. We do not hands-on test products ourselves, and we say so on every review. Commission from retailer links never affects which products we pick. Read how we research.

Steam and crease removal. On paper the VIN401 is in the same league as the Russell Hobbs Powersteam Ultra: 70g/min of continuous steam and a 200g shot from a 3100W element. Owners at Argos and Amazon UK back this up. The most common praise is that it powers through a family pile, that the shot deals with duvet covers and denim, and that steam is automatic rather than on a trigger you have to hold. Steam is variable, so you can turn it down for synthetics, and there is vertical steam for hanging jackets and curtains, helped by the long 3m cord.
The soleplate. Breville adds crushed diamond to the ceramic coating and claims better glide and durability. The plate is wider than most, with steam channels running to a precision tip for collars and button rows. Most owners describe the glide as very smooth. A minority report the opposite: fabric sticking to the plate even at low temperatures, and a dark patch forming in one spot. This is the single most common complaint on Breville’s site, and it is worth knowing before you buy. One Amazon owner also finds the ridges in the plate catch on hems.
Weight. Argos lists 1.63kg empty, which makes this one of the heavier corded irons on sale, and with a full 400ml tank you are holding close to 2kg. As with the Russell Hobbs 20630, opinion splits: some owners like that the weight does the pressing, others find it tiring. If weight matters, see our lightweight irons.
Day-to-day use. Heat-up is quoted at under 30 seconds and owners agree it is quick. The 400ml tank is bigger than the 20630’s 350ml and lasts a long session. Auto shut-off works in three positions and a Safe-Store light tells you when the iron is cool enough to put away, which is a genuinely useful touch. The controls are a temperature dial and a steam slider; several owners mention the dial is easy to knock while ironing.
Reliability: the big question. Across Breville’s site and the critical Amazon reviews, the same faults repeat: continuous steam or the shot button failing after months to about two years, water leaking from the fill cap or heel, and brown or rusty water spitting onto clothes. Some owners say the self-clean did not fix it. A few describe overheating or smoke, which we cannot verify but which appears more than once. Breville’s guarantee is 1 year, against 2 years for Russell Hobbs, Tefal and Morphy Richards, and that is the main reason we rank it below those brands at a similar price.
What owners mention. Amazon’s summary of its reviews lists quality, value for money, ease of use, steam output and the long cord as the main positives, with weight, heat output and durability as the mixed or negative themes. That matches Argos, where the praise is strong steam, fast heat-up and value, and the complaints are weight and early failures.
- 70g/min continuous steam and a 200g shot for budget money
- Wide, smooth diamond-ceramic soleplate with a precision tip
- Large 400ml tank and 3m cord
- Three-way auto shut-off and a cool-to-store indicator
- Automatic steam, no trigger to hold
- Rated 4.6 out of 5 by Argos shoppers
- Only a 1-year guarantee
- Recurring reports of leaking, rusty water and steam failing after a year or so
- Some owners report fabric sticking to the soleplate
- Heavy at 1.63kg empty

Our verdict: Anyone who wants maximum steam for the least money, is happy to flush and self-clean it regularly, and accepts the shorter guarantee.
Safer buy
Russell Hobbs Powersteam Ultra 20630: Safer buy
- Power: 3100W
- Continuous steam: 70g/min
- Steam shot: 210g/min
- Tank: 350ml
The same 3100W and 70g/min with a slightly stronger shot, a 2-year guarantee and a much cleaner owner record. Our pick over the Breville at similar money.
Lighter rival
Morphy Richards Turbo Glide 302000: Lighter rival
- Power: 2800W
- Continuous steam: 40g/min
- Steam shot: 150g/min
- Tank: 400ml
Less steam on paper, but a precision tip that is excellent on shirts, the same 400ml tank and a 2-year guarantee. Expert Reviews rated it best for crease removal.
For hard water
Tefal Ultragliss Anti-Calc Plus FV6848: For hard water
- Power: 2800W
- Continuous steam: 50g/min
- Steam shot: 260g/min
- Tank: 270ml
If scale is behind your worries about leaks, its pull-out scale collector rinses under the tap in seconds. Less steam, far easier to keep clean.

The two 3100W irons are almost identical on paper. The Breville has the bigger tank and the three-way shut-off; the Russell Hobbs has a slightly stronger shot, is a little lighter and comes with a 2-year guarantee. Owner reviews of the 20630 mention far fewer leaking and early-failure complaints, and Expert Reviews and Mumsnet both recommend it. Unless the Breville is clearly cheaper on the day, we would buy the Russell Hobbs. The Turbo Glide produces less steam but its precision tip is excellent on shirts, and it is the one to pick if you mainly iron cotton shirts rather than bedding. See all three in our best steam irons guide.
Getting the best from the DiamondXpress
- Flush it before first use as the manual says: fill, heat to maximum, and run the self-clean over a sink until the water runs clear. Owners who skipped this are the ones reporting brown water on the first wash.
- Run self-clean every two to four weeks, and more often in a hard-water area. Several of the “steam stopped working” reviews describe scale, and in a very hard-water area a Tefal with a removable scale collector is easier to live with. Full steps in how to descale a steam iron.
- Let it reach temperature before steaming. Steaming on a low setting is the usual cause of drips and water marks on any iron, and the anti-drip system only helps so much.
- Keep the plate clean. Wipe it when cool with a damp cloth after ironing synthetics, and lift it over zips and prints. If something has already melted on, our guide to sticky residue explains the fix.
- Empty the tank after every session and store it upright on its heel, using the Safe-Store light to tell you when it is cool.
- Register the guarantee and keep the receipt. With only 12 months of cover, a fault in month 11 is worth claiming for.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Breville VIN401 DiamondXpress a good iron?
It is a powerful iron for the money, with 70g/min of continuous steam, a 200g shot, a 400ml tank and a 3m cord, and most Argos and Amazon UK owners rate it highly. Its weak points are a 1-year guarantee and a recurring minority of leaking, sticking and early-failure complaints, so a Russell Hobbs 20630 is a safer buy at a similar price.
How heavy is the Breville VIN401?
Argos lists it at 1.63kg empty, so close to 2kg with a full 400ml tank. That is heavier than most rivals. Some owners like the weight for pressing, others find it tiring.
Why does my Breville iron leak or spit brown water?
Usually scale, or steaming before the iron has reached temperature. Run the self-clean function over a sink until the water runs clear, wait for the ready light before using steam, and empty the tank after each use. If it still leaks from the fill cap or heel when new, return it under the guarantee.
What is the guarantee on the Breville DiamondXpress?
Breville gives a 1-year manufacturer’s guarantee. Russell Hobbs, Tefal and Morphy Richards irons at the same price come with 2 years.
Does the Breville VIN401 switch off automatically?
Yes. It has a three-way auto shut-off that cuts power when it is left flat, standing upright or knocked onto its side, and a Safe-Store indicator that shows when it has cooled enough to put away.
Does the Breville VIN401 soleplate really contain diamonds?
Breville says real crushed diamond is added to the ceramic coating to improve glide and durability. Most owners describe the glide as smooth, but a minority report fabric sticking to the plate, so keep it clean and lift it over zips and prints.
