Soleplates: Durilium vs SteamGlide
Tefal’s Durilium AirGlide soleplates are among the slickest you can buy, and the steam-hole layout spreads steam well. Philips’ SteamGlide Plus/Elite soleplates glide very well too and are especially scratch resistant. In practice both are excellent on mid-range and premium models. On budget models, both brands use standard ceramic.
Descaling: Tefal wins
Limescale is what kills most irons in England’s hard-water areas. Tefal’s removable scale collector (Ultragliss Anti-Calc Plus and Pro Express steam generators) slides out and rinses under the tap in seconds. Philips’ Quick Calc Release and Easy De-Calc work well, but you drain water and scale out of the iron or base, which takes a little longer.
Temperature control: Philips wins
Philips OptimalTEMP (Azur 8000 and PerfectCare steam generators) uses one fixed, safe temperature with the right amount of steam for every ironable fabric, and Philips guarantees no burns.
