Verdict: the Tefal Pro Express Protect GV9230 is the steam generator we recommend if you want the least fuss. It has 7.5 bar, 140g/min of continuous steam, a 560g boost and a big 1.8L removable tank, one preset setting for every ironable fabric, Tefal’s rinse-out scale collector and auto shut-off after 8 minutes. Its weak points are a short 1.6m power cable, no temperature control for people who want it, and a price close to stronger models. If you want the most steam, the Pro Express Vision GV9820 is our best steam generator overall; for less money, the Express Airglide keeps the 1.8L tank.
The Pro Express Protect sits in the middle of Tefal’s high-pressure range, alongside the older Pro Express Ultimate II and below the 9-bar Vision. Its selling point is in the name: a “smart thermostat” setting that Tefal says is safe for all ironable fabrics, so you can go from a silk blouse to jeans without touching a dial or waiting. It is our “best for mixed fabrics” pick in our best steam generator irons guide.
It is in stock at Amazon UK, sold by Amazon, with more than 1,400 owner ratings. This review covers its specifications, what owners report, and how it compares with the other Tefal steam generators.

Reviewed
Tefal Pro Express Protect GV9230: Reviewed
- Power: 2600W
- Pressure: 7.5 bar
- Continuous steam: 140g/min
- Boost: 560g/min
- Tank: 1.8L, removable
- Temperature: One preset for all fabrics, plus Eco mode
- Soleplate: Durilium AirGlide AutoClean
- Anti-scale: Removable scale collector
- Auto shut-off: Yes, after 8 minutes
- Extras: Carry lock, vertical steam, anti-drip
- Power cable: 1.6m (Amazon listing)
Steam and speed. 7.5 bar and 140g/min of continuous steam are well above any steam iron, and the 560g boost deals with denim, linen and bedding. Owners at Amazon UK repeatedly say it roughly halves their ironing time compared with a normal iron and makes quick work of duvet covers.
One setting for everything. There is no temperature dial. Tefal says the preset steam and temperature combination is safe for every ironable fabric, and an anti-drip system stops water marks on delicates. Most owners love not having to sort their washing by fabric; a minority miss being able to turn the heat up or down. An Eco mode uses less energy for lighter loads.
Tank and convenience. The 1.8L tank is removable and 50% bigger than the 1.2L tanks on the Vision and Ultimate II, so a big session rarely needs a refill. The iron head is light, and a carry lock clips the iron to the base for moving it.
Scale. Tefal’s removable scale collector is the easiest descaling system on any steam generator: when the light comes on, unscrew it, rinse it under the tap and refit it. See how to clean a steam generator.
Weak points. The Amazon listing gives a 1.6m power cable, which is short if your socket is not near the board; you may need a heavy-duty extension lead. Value for money gets mixed comments: it is often priced close to the stronger Vision. The base is bulky, so it needs a board with a steam generator rest or a nearby surface.
- No settings: safe on every ironable fabric
- Large 1.8L removable tank
- Rinse-out scale collector
- Auto shut-off and carry lock
- Strong 560g boost
- Short 1.6m power cable
- No temperature control if you want it
- Less steam than the Vision
- Bulky base
Our verdict: Households with lots of different fabrics who don't want to think about settings.

The Protect trades a little steam for a 1.8L tank and no-settings convenience. The Vision is the most powerful and adds a crease-revealing LED, for more money. The Ultimate II has slightly more steam but a smaller tank and no listed auto shut-off; see our Ultimate II review. The Express Airglide keeps a 1.8L tank for much less. All four are in our Tefal steam generator guide.
Getting the best from the Protect
- Wait for the ready light before pressing the steam trigger, to avoid spitting.
- Rinse the scale collector whenever the descale light comes on, and more often in hard-water areas.
- Use Eco mode for light loads and delicates to save energy.
- Put the base on a stable surface or a board with a steam generator rest; see boards for steam generators.
