In short: IronsExpert recommends steam irons, steam generators, garment steamers and ironing boards sold in the UK. Every recommendation is based on published specifications, independent test results, expert reviews and large samples of verified owner reviews, and we re-check our buying guides at least twice a year. We earn a commission when you buy through some of our links, but that never decides which products we recommend.
What we look at
For each product category we build a shortlist of models that are currently on sale from major UK retailers (Amazon UK, Argos, Currys, John Lewis and AO). We then compare them on the things that actually change how ironing feels day to day:
- Steam performance: continuous steam (g/min), steam boost (g/min) and, for steam generators, pressure (bar). More steam means fewer passes on thick cotton, linen and bedding.
- Soleplate: glide, scratch resistance and steam-hole layout (for example Tefal Durilium, Philips SteamGlide, Morphy Richards ceramic).
- Limescale protection: self-clean, anti-calc cartridges or collectors. This matters a lot in hard-water areas of England.
- Water tank size and refilling: how long you can iron before stopping, and whether the tank is removable.
- Weight and ergonomics: iron weight, cord length, heel rest stability and vertical steaming.
- Safety: auto shut-off, carry locks and anti-drip.
- Price and value: typical UK price over recent months, warranty length and running costs (descaling cartridges, replacement covers).
- Reliability: recurring problems reported in owner reviews, such as leaking, spitting, failed pumps or flaking soleplates.
Where our information comes from
- Manufacturer specifications and user manuals (Tefal, Rowenta, Philips, Morphy Richards, Russell Hobbs, Bosch, Braun, Minky, Brabantia and others).
- Independent lab and expert testing published by UK consumer and technology publications.
- Verified owner reviews on UK retailer sites. We read the critical one- and two-star reviews as closely as the five-star ones, because patterns of faults are what separates a good iron from a bad one.
- Hands-on use, where we have it. When a recommendation is based on our own use of a product, we say so explicitly on the page.
We do not run a testing laboratory and we never present research as if it were a lab test.
How we keep guides up to date
Irons are replaced by new models every one to three years. We re-check every buying guide at least twice a year. We remove discontinued models, add new ones and correct specifications, and each page shows the date it was last updated. When a model we reviewed has been discontinued, we say so at the top of its review and point to current alternatives.
