This is a research-based review. We have not tested this model ourselves: it brings together Tefal’s UK specifications, independent UK roundups and patterns in verified owner reviews at Amazon UK and Argos, compared against the other cordless irons we cover.

Verdict: the Tefal Freemove Power is the cordless iron to buy if you want to lose the cable without losing much steam. It weighs 960g, gives 40g/min of continuous steam and a 220g boost, recharges in about 11 seconds on its horizontal base, and Mumsnet named it the best cordless iron of 2026. The catch is the one every cordless iron has: you get about 35 seconds of ironing before it needs to go back on the base, so it suits shirts and small loads better than a weekly family pile. If you need power for big loads, a corded iron like the Russell Hobbs 20630 is faster.

Cordless irons have a reputation for going cold too quickly. Tefal’s answer in the Freemove Power is a fast 2600W element that recharges in seconds, plus a light 960g body so returning it to the base is easy. It is the iron we rank first in our best cordless irons guide, and it is one of the best-selling steam irons at Amazon UK. This review covers what it does well, where cordless still falls short, and which models to consider instead.

A note on model codes. The current Freemove Power is sold as FV6674 and FV6676 (the code changes with the colour; the specifications are the same). The older FV6642, still listed at some retailers, has slightly less power: 2500W, 35g/min and a 200g shot. This review covers the current 2600W version.

How we chose these picks

We compared the manufacturers’ published specifications, independent UK tests and reviews (including Tefal UK product page for the Freemove Power, Mumsnet's best cordless irons (May 2026), Argos listing (Freemove Power FV6642), owner reviews at Amazon UK and Argos), and recurring themes in verified owner reviews. We checked that every product was on sale in the UK when this page was last updated, and we re-check stock every month. We do not hands-on test products ourselves, and we say so on every review. • Power: 2600W
  • Continuous steam: 40g/min
  • Steam shot: 220g/min
  • Tank: 250ml
  • Weight: 960g (iron only)
  • Heat-up: 30 seconds
  • Recharge: About 11 seconds on the base
  • Ironing per charge: About 35 seconds
  • Soleplate: Scratch-resistant ceramic
  • Auto shut-off: Yes
  • Base: Horizontal charging base with lock-and-carry
  • Cord: 1.9m, on the base
  • Repairability: Tefal says repairable for 15 years

Steam and crease removal. 40g/min of continuous steam and a 220g boost are strong figures for a cordless iron; they match many corded irons in the same price range. Owners say pressed results on shirts and cotton are excellent, and Mumsnet chose it as the best cordless iron of 2026, picking out the steam shot. It is not as strong as a 3100W corded iron like the Russell Hobbs 20630 (70g/min, 210g shot), and the difference shows on linen and bedding.

How cordless works in practice. The iron heats on its base in about 30 seconds. Lift it off and you have roughly 35 seconds of ironing before it needs reheating; put it back and it recharges in about 11 seconds. The rhythm that works is short strokes and a quick return to the base between sections of a garment. The horizontal base means you slide the iron in flat rather than standing it on its heel, which is easier on the wrist and quicker. Lights on the base flash when the iron needs to come back.

Weight and comfort. At 960g the Freemove Power is one of the lightest irons we cover, corded or not, and owners with arthritis or limited mobility single it out for being easy to handle. With no cable dragging across the fabric, you can work round shirt yokes and sleeves without the garment being pulled. Argos lists 1.74kg for the iron and base together.

Day-to-day use. The 250ml tank is small, so you will refill during a long session. Some owners find the tinted tank makes the water level hard to see. Auto shut-off cuts power if the iron is left alone, and the lock-and-carry base clips the iron in place for moving it. There is no vertical steam on this model, so it is not the one to choose for curtains or hanging jackets.

Reliability. Most owners are very positive, but Amazon’s summary of reviews flags reliability, heating and leakage as mixed. A minority report the iron cooling too quickly on thick fabric, some drips at low temperatures, and a small number of units that stopped heating within the first year. Leaks usually come from steaming before the iron is hot; wait for the base light. If a unit stops heating within the guarantee, ask for a replacement rather than a repair.

Pros

  • Very light at 960g
  • Strong 220g boost for a cordless iron
  • Recharges in about 11 seconds
  • Horizontal slide-in base
  • Mumsnet's best cordless iron 2026
Cons

  • About 35 seconds of ironing per charge
  • Small 250ml tank
  • No vertical steam
  • Some reports of drips and early failures

Our verdict: Shirts, small loads and anyone who finds a heavy corded iron tiring.

The Freemove Power has the strongest boost of the three, the fastest recharge and the lightest body; the Tower matches its continuous steam but is heavier at about 1.2kg. The Morphy Richards easyCHARGE has a bigger 350ml tank and a better record in hard-water areas, so it suits people who iron longer sessions and get a lot of limescale; see our easyCHARGE review. The Tower CeraGlide is the budget option and can also be used with its cord attached, which removes the 35-second limit when you need it. Compare them all in our best cordless irons guide.

Is a cordless iron right for you?

Cordless suits you if you mainly iron shirts, blouses and a few items at a time, if you have limited space or a sore wrist, or if a cable dragging across the board drives you mad. It is the wrong choice if you iron a big family basket every week or a lot of bedding: you will spend too much time waiting at the base, and a corded steam iron or a steam generator will be quicker. Which? has found that cordless irons score lower on average than corded ones for exactly this reason.

Getting the best from the Freemove Power

  • Iron in short sections and return the iron to the base between them; it recharges in about 11 seconds.
  • Keep the base close, at the end of the board, so docking is one movement.
  • Wait for the light before using steam after a recharge or a temperature change, to avoid drips.
  • Use the steam shot on stubborn creases rather than turning the temperature up.
  • Empty the tank after use and use the anti-scale setting regularly in hard-water areas; see how to descale a steam iron.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tefal Freemove Power worth buying?

Yes, if you want a cordless iron. It is light at 960g, has a strong 220g boost for a cordless model, recharges in about 11 seconds and was Mumsnet’s best cordless iron of 2026. For big weekly loads a corded iron is still faster.

How long does the Tefal Freemove Power stay hot off the base?

Tefal quotes about 35 seconds of ironing per charge, and about 11 seconds to recharge on the base. In practice you iron a section, put it back briefly and carry on.

How heavy is the Tefal Freemove Power?

Tefal says the iron weighs 960g. Argos lists 1.74kg, which is the iron and charging base together.

What is the difference between the Tefal FV6642 and FV6674/FV6676?

The FV6642 is the earlier Freemove Power with 2500W, 35g/min and a 200g shot. The FV6674 and FV6676 are the current 2600W versions with 40g/min and a 220g boost; the code changes with the colour.

Does the Tefal Freemove Power have auto shut-off?

Yes. It switches off if it is left unattended, and the base has a lock-and-carry clip for moving it safely.

Can you use the Tefal Freemove Power for vertical steaming?

Tefal does not list vertical steam for this model. For curtains and hanging clothes, use a corded iron with vertical steam or a handheld steamer.
