Quick answer: a steam generator needs two kinds of cleaning. Descale the base regularly using its built-in system (rinse Tefal’s scale collector, drain Philips’ Easy De-Calc, or run Morphy Richards AutoClean) when the reminder light comes on, usually every 1–2 months in hard-water areas. Clean the soleplate when cool with a damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid, and never use scourers. Always unplug the unit and let it cool fully first.
Before you start
- Unplug the steam generator and let the base cool for at least 2 hours (the boiler holds very hot water under pressure).
- Work over a sink or a towel.
- Check your manual, because the steps vary by model.
Tefal Pro Express (scale collector)
- With the base cold, open the scale collector flap on the side of the base.
- Unscrew and pull out the collector.
- Rinse it under the tap to remove the scale, then refit it firmly.
- Reset the descaling light if your model needs it.
Philips PerfectCare (Easy De-Calc)
- With the base cold, hold it over a sink with the Easy De-Calc knob facing down.
- Unscrew the knob and let the water and scale flow out.
- Refit the knob and refill the tank.
Morphy Richards (AutoClean)
Follow the on-base AutoClean reminder: with the unit set up as the manual describes, run the AutoClean cycle to flush scale out. No cartridges are needed.
Russell Hobbs and others (anti-calc cartridge)
Rinse or replace the anti-calc cartridge as directed in the manual. Cartridges have a limited life in hard-water areas.
Cleaning the soleplate
- With the iron cool, wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and a drop of washing-up liquid.
- For residue, use a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water on non-coated plates, avoiding the steam holes. See how to remove sticky residue.

- Steam over an old towel afterwards to flush any residue.
What not to do
- Don’t pour vinegar or descaler into the base or tank unless the manual allows it.
- Don’t use metal scourers or abrasive cleaners on the soleplate.
- Don’t open the boiler while it is hot.
