This is a research-based review. We have not tested this model ourselves: it brings together Braun’s specifications, UK retailer listings and patterns in owner reviews, compared against the other steam generators we cover.

Verdict: the Braun CareStyle 7 Pro (IS7282) is the most comfortable steam generator we cover. Its FreeGlide 3D soleplate curves up at the back and sides, so it slides backwards over buttons and pockets, and the iron itself weighs about 1kg. You also get 8 bar of pressure, the biggest tank in our guide (2L) and one iCare setting that is safe on every ironable fabric. The weak spot is reliability: a noticeable minority of UK owners report leaks or faults after a year or two. If you want the least effort per shirt, the Philips PerfectCare 7000 has motion-sensor steam; if you live in a hard-water area, the Tefal Pro Express Protect is easier to keep clean.

CareStyle is Braun’s name for its steam generators, and the 7 Pro is the top of the range in the UK. Braun sells it in two versions: the blue IS7282BL covered here and the black IS7286BK. Braun says the black model is the stronger of the two (190g/min of continuous steam); the blue one is the version Amazon UK stocks and the one most UK buyers will find.

The figures for the IS7282 vary between retailers. Costco UK and John Lewis list 180g/min of continuous steam, Costco lists 8 bar and a 600g shot, and Appliances Direct quotes 7.5 bar, 140g/min and a 500g shot. Braun’s own UK page does not give a figure for the blue model. We have used the most recent listings below and noted where they differ. Either way, it sits with the Philips PerfectCare 7000 and Tefal Pro Express Protect rather than in the budget class.

  • Boost: 600g (Appliances Direct lists 500g)
  • Tank: 2L, removable
  • Power: 2700W
  • Weight: About 1kg iron, 4.94kg with base
  • Size (H x W x D): 29.5 x 22 x 40cm
  • Cord: 1.7m
  • Soleplate: FreeGlide 3D EloxalPlus
  • Modes: iCare, Eco, Turbo and ProSteam
  • Descaling: Ultimate FastClean
  • Other: Vertical steam, anti-drip, ergonomics-certified handle
  • Auto shut-off: –

The soleplate and handle. This is the reason to choose a Braun. Most soleplates have a sharp back edge, so when you pull the iron back towards you it catches on buttons, pocket seams and plackets. FreeGlide 3D curves upwards at the back and sides, so you can iron backwards and sideways as easily as forwards. Braun says the EloxalPlus coating is twice as hard as stainless steel. The handle is open and angled to reduce strain on the wrist, and Braun had it certified by ErgoCert, an Italian ergonomics institute. Owners often describe the iron as light and easy to steer into collars and sleeves.

Steam and crease removal. At 8 bar and 180g/min, the CareStyle 7 Pro is in the same class as the Philips PerfectCare 7000 (8.5 bar, 170g/min) and ahead of the Tefal Pro Express Protect (7.5 bar, 140g/min). Turbo mode raises the temperature and steam for denim, linen and heavy cotton. ProSteam mode gives a steady flow without you holding the trigger, which also makes vertical steaming of curtains and hanging jackets easier. Owners mention strong steam that clears creases in one pass more than anything else.

iCare mode. Like Philips’ OptimalTEMP, iCare is one temperature that Braun says is safe on all ironable fabrics, so you can go from a viscose blouse to cotton trousers without changing anything. You switch between the four modes with a button on the handle, so you do not need to put the iron down. Eco mode uses up to 55% less energy than Turbo, according to Braun.

Day-to-day use. The 2L tank is the largest in our steam generator guide and lifts out for filling at the tap. The base is fairly compact for a steam generator at 40cm deep, but the whole unit weighs almost 5kg and one owner calls it bulky to store. The 1.7m cord is on the short side, so check where your socket is. Braun describes it as quiet, and descaling uses a FastClean system on the base.

What owners mention. UK owner reviews on Amazon split into two groups. Most are very positive: owners describe it as the best iron they have had, praise the powerful steam and say it handles delicate items and heavy cotton without fuss. Several are on their second CareStyle. The negative reviews are about reliability rather than ironing: water spitting from the soleplate on a new unit, a leak from the side of the base after the return period, control lights flashing and the iron refusing to start, and units failing after 18 months to two years. A few owners were also unhappy with how long repairs took. The 2-year guarantee covers the period in which most of these faults are reported, so keep your proof of purchase.

Pros

  • FreeGlide 3D soleplate glides backwards over buttons
  • Light iron (about 1kg) with an ergonomics-certified handle
  • Biggest tank in our guide (2L)
  • iCare: one safe setting for all fabrics
  • Strong 8 bar steam with Turbo and ProSteam modes
  • 2-year guarantee
Cons

  • Mixed reports on long-term reliability
  • Short 1.7m cord
  • No motion-sensor steam like the Philips 7000
  • Retailers disagree on the steam figures for the blue model

Our verdict: People who iron in long sessions, have wrist or shoulder strain, or iron a lot of shirts with button plackets.

Philips PerfectCare 7000 PSG7300

  • Pressure: 8.5 bar
  • Continuous steam: 170g/min
  • Boost: 650g
  • Tank: 1.5L

Motion-sensor steam and the OptimalTEMP no-burn guarantee, with a little more pressure but a smaller 1.5L tank and no backwards-gliding soleplate.

Tefal Pro Express Protect GV9230

  • Pressure: 7.5 bar
  • Continuous steam: 140g/min
  • Boost: 560g

Less steam than the Braun, but its rinse-out scale collector is the easiest descaling system of the three in hard-water areas.

All three sit in the same price tier and all three spare you a temperature dial, so the choice comes down to what matters most to you.

Choose the Braun for comfort and glide. The FreeGlide 3D soleplate is the only one of the three that is shaped to move backwards over buttons, the iron is light, and the 2L tank means the fewest refills.

Choose the Philips if you want the least effort. Its motion sensor releases steam only when the iron moves, so there is nothing to hold or switch, and Philips guarantees no burns even if you leave the hot iron face down on a garment. It also has more owner reviews behind it. Read our PerfectCare 7000 review.

Choose the Tefal if you live in a hard-water area. Its scale collector slides out and rinses under the tap, which is the simplest descaling system of the three. Our best iron for hard water guide explains why that matters.

CareStyle 7 Pro vs Braun TexStyle 7 Pro

If you like the idea of FreeGlide 3D but do not iron enough to justify a steam generator, the TexStyle 7 Pro is Braun’s best corded steam iron. It has the same soleplate shape and a 230g shot, but only 50g/min of continuous steam and a 300ml tank. That is fine for a few shirts a week. For a family basket, bedding or anything thick, the CareStyle’s 180g/min and 2L tank will save a lot of time. See all of Braun’s irons in our best Braun steam irons guide.

Getting the best from the CareStyle 7 Pro

  • Let it heat fully before the first steam, and run the first burst over an old towel. Spitting on a brand-new unit is the most common early complaint, and it often settles after the first few uses. If it keeps spitting hot water, return it while you are still inside the retailer’s return window.
  • Use iCare for everyday loads and switch to Turbo only for denim, linen and heavy cotton. Eco mode is enough for delicates and light ironing.
  • Descale regularly. Follow the FastClean steps in the manual whenever the descaling light comes on, and more often in a hard-water area. Our guide to cleaning a steam generator iron covers the general routine.
  • Empty the tank after each session rather than leaving water standing in it between uses.
  • Use a board with a strong rest. The unit weighs almost 5kg, so it needs a board built for steam generators. See the best ironing boards for a steam generator.
  • Register it with Braun and keep your receipt. Given the reliability reports, the 2-year guarantee is worth having in order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Braun CareStyle 7 Pro worth buying?

Yes, if comfort is your priority. The FreeGlide 3D soleplate, light iron and 2L tank make long sessions easier than on most steam generators. If you want motion-sensor steam, the Philips PerfectCare 7000 is the better buy, and some owners report reliability problems with the Braun after a year or two.

What is the difference between the Braun IS7282 and IS7286?

Both are CareStyle 7 Pro steam generators with FreeGlide 3D, a 2L tank and the same four modes. Braun says the black IS7286 is the more powerful of the two, with up to 190g/min of continuous steam. The blue IS7282 is listed at 180g/min by Costco UK and John Lewis.

Does the Braun CareStyle 7 Pro have an auto shut-off?

Braun’s UK product page does not list one in its features, and John Lewis does not include it in its specification. Check the manual or ask the retailer before buying if this matters to you.

Can I use tap water in the Braun CareStyle 7 Pro?

Yes. John Lewis lists it as suitable for tap water. In a hard-water area, descale it more often to keep the steam strong.

What does iCare mode do?

iCare sets one temperature and steam level that Braun says is safe on all ironable fabrics, so you do not have to change settings between garments. The other modes are Eco for lower energy use, Turbo for tough creases and ProSteam for a steady flow without holding the trigger.
