Quick answer: auto shut-off cuts power to the heating element when the iron has not moved for a set time, usually about 30 seconds lying flat and about 8 minutes standing on its heel. It does not unplug the iron, and the soleplate stays hot for a while afterwards. If you think you left an iron on, switch it off at a smart plug if you have one, ask a neighbour or keyholder to check, and call 999 only if someone reports smoke or fire. Most current irons from Philips, Tefal, Braun, Russell Hobbs and Morphy Richards have the feature; many budget irons and some steam generators do not, and the table below lists every model we recommend.
London Fire Brigade has attributed at least two recent house fires to irons left on: one in Twickenham in January 2026 and one in Southall in August 2024. An auto shut-off cannot replace the habit of switching off and unplugging, but it removes the most common failure: an iron left face down on the board or a shirt.
What does auto shut-off actually do?
Auto shut-off is a motion sensor and a timer. If the iron sits still for longer than the set time, the electronics cut power to the heating element, and most models flash a light or beep. Move the iron and it starts heating again.
It is worth being clear about what it does not do.
- It does not unplug the iron. The plug, the cord and the control board stay live. Russell Hobbs’ manuals say the iron “will switch off”, but it is still a connected appliance.
- The soleplate stays hot. A 2,400W to 3,100W iron heats its soleplate to around 200°C on the cotton setting. Cutting the power stops the heating; it does not cool the plate, which keeps enough heat to scorch fabric for some minutes.
- Movement restarts it. Manuals from Russell Hobbs, Tefal and Morphy Richards all say that shaking or lifting the iron brings it back to temperature. A knock from a pet or a child can do the same.
- Not every model has it. Auto shut-off is standard on mid-range and premium irons but missing from many budget steam irons, dry irons and travel irons, and from several steam generators.
Some listings go further. Tefal’s Pro Express Protect, Morphy Richards’ Power Steam Elite and Tower’s CeraGlide listings say the iron also switches off if it is knocked over, and Argos says the same of the Russell Hobbs Powersteam Ultra 20630 (Currys calls it a three-way auto shut-off) and the Morphy Richards Turbo Glide 302000. Treat retailer wording with care: the Russell Hobbs 20630 manual itself describes only the flat and upright timers. Braun’s TexStyle 1 uses a motion sensor rather than a simple timer.
How long before an iron switches itself off?
The timings below come from manufacturer manuals and product sheets. The pattern is the same across most brands: a short delay when the iron is face down or on its side, where it can scorch, and a long delay when it is standing on its heel.
| Brand | Face down or on its side | Standing on its heel | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Russell Hobbs (Powersteam Ultra, Absolute Steam, Supreme Steam 23260) | About 30 seconds | About 8 minutes | Russell Hobbs manuals (20630, 26340, 25900, 25910, 23260) |
| Philips Azur and 3000 Series | 30 seconds | 8 minutes | Philips product sheets (DST3040, GC4938, GC4860) |
| Tefal steam irons | 30 seconds | 8 minutes | Tefal product pages (Access Protect, Ultimate Pure) |
| Braun TexStyle | 30 seconds (some TexStyle 5 listings say 1 minute) | 8 minutes | Braun TexStyle 7 Pro page and retailer listings |
| Morphy Richards corded irons | 1 minute | 8 minutes | Morphy Richards manuals and retailer listings |
| Morphy Richards easyCHARGE cordless | n/a | About 8 minutes on the base | Morphy Richards support (303250/303251) |
| Beldray Precision1 | Not published | Over 8 minutes | Beldray product page |
| Philips PerfectCare 7000 steam generator | n/a | 10 minutes unused | Philips PerfectCare 7000 series manual |
| Swan SI12051AQ steam generator | n/a | 10 minutes | Swan product page |
| Morphy Richards 332102 steam generator | n/a | 8 minutes | Retailer listing |
| Tefal steam generators | n/a | Not published | Tefal UK pages list “Auto-Off” without a time |
Steam generators work differently from irons. The base, not the iron, has the timer, so the delay is measured from the last press of the steam trigger or the last movement, and it is longer: 8 to 10 minutes where a figure is published. Philips’ PerfectCare 7000 series manual says the unit switches off automatically when it has not been used for 10 minutes; we could not find a published figure for the PerfectCare 8000.
How long does the soleplate stay hot after switching off?
No manufacturer we checked publishes a cooling time, so treat any figure as a rule of thumb. Our rule: do not touch the soleplate, wrap the cord or put the iron away for at least 30 minutes after switching off, and give a steam generator base longer, because the boiler holds pressurised hot water. Our steam generator cleaning guide suggests two hours before opening the base.
What matters for fire safety is where the iron cools. An iron on its heel on a metal iron rest, with nothing touching the soleplate, cools harmlessly. An iron lying face down on a cotton cover, a towel or a bed keeps feeding heat into fabric that cannot move away from it. London Fire Brigade’s advice on hair straighteners applies equally to irons: switch them off and leave them to cool on a heatproof surface.
What to do if you think you left the iron on
- Check a smart plug or camera first. If the iron is on a smart plug, switch the socket off from your phone. Many UK smart plugs are rated at 13A, which is about 3kW, so check the rating before using one with a 3,100W iron. A home camera can show you the board in seconds.
- Ask someone to look. A neighbour, partner or keyholder can check and unplug it. If you are close, go back yourself.
- Do not assume auto shut-off has saved you. It probably has, if the iron is a recent mid-range model standing on its heel. If the iron is face down on the board, or is a budget or dry iron without the feature, treat it as live.
- Call 999 if there is any sign of fire. If a neighbour reports smoke, an alarm sounding or a smell of burning, call 999 and ask for the fire service. Do not go in to fetch the iron. If nothing suggests a fire, it is not a 999 call.
- When you get home, unplug the iron at the wall before touching it, check the board cover and anything beneath it for scorching, and let everything cool before storing.
Safe-ironing checklist
These points draw on London Fire Brigade’s advice after the Southall and Twickenham fires and its electrical items guidance, plus the habits that stop irons scorching.
- Switch the iron off as soon as you leave the room, even for a phone call. London Fire Brigade’s wording after the Southall fire: switch equipment such as irons, hair straighteners and portable heaters off as soon as you leave the room.
- Check irons are switched off and unplugged when not in use. The Brigade repeated this after the Twickenham fire.
- Stand the iron on its heel, on the board’s iron rest, between garments. Never leave it face down.
- Keep clothing, bedding and the ironing pile away from the iron and its cord.
- Keep worktops clear near irons, toasters and hobs. Clutter can switch an appliance on or catch fire.
- Plug the iron straight into a wall socket. London Fire Brigade advises one plug per socket for high-powered appliances, and says cable-drum extension leads should always be completely unwound.
- Do not iron on a bed or carpet. If you have no board, follow our guide to ironing without an ironing board.
- Let the iron cool on a heatproof surface before wrapping the cord or putting it in a cupboard.
- Fit and test smoke alarms. A fire from an iron starts slowly and gives an alarm time to work.
- If you are forgetful, buy an iron with auto shut-off and put it on a smart plug with a schedule.
Which recommended irons have auto shut-off?
The tables cover every iron and steam generator we recommend across the site. “Yes” means the manufacturer or a named retailer specification lists the feature. “No” means a specification lists it as absent. “Not published” means we could not find it stated either way, or listings contradict each other, and we would not rely on it. Timings are given only where the maker or a listing states one.

Two patterns stand out. First, the feature is close to universal on irons from the big five brands and absent or unstated on most cheap, travel and dry irons. Second, steam generators are less consistent than irons: Tefal’s UK pages list “Auto-Off” for the Pro Express Vision and Protect but do not state it either way for the Ultimate II or Express Airglide, while Currys lists the Russell Hobbs Steam Power 24420 as not having it. “Not stated” is not the same as “absent”, so if you want the feature on a generator, check the specification line rather than assuming.
Frequently asked questions
Will an iron turn itself off?
Only if it has auto shut-off. Most current Philips, Tefal, Braun, Russell Hobbs and Morphy Richards steam irons do, switching off after about 30 seconds face down or about 8 minutes on the heel. Many budget, travel and dry irons do not, so check the specification.
How long does an iron stay hot after switching off?
Manufacturers do not publish a cooling time. Treat the soleplate as hot for at least 30 minutes after switching off, and leave a steam generator base longer because its boiler holds hot water under pressure.
Can an iron catch fire if left on?
Yes. London Fire Brigade attributed house fires in Southall in 2024 and Twickenham in 2026 to irons left on. The risk is highest when an iron without auto shut-off is left face down on fabric.
Do steam generators have auto shut-off?
Many do, including the Philips PerfectCare range, the Philips 2000 Series, Tefal’s Pro Express Vision and Protect, and the Morphy Richards Autoclean models. Currys lists the Russell Hobbs Steam Power 24420 without it, and Tefal’s UK pages do not state it for the Pro Express Ultimate II or Express Airglide, so check each model.
Does auto shut-off unplug the iron?
No. It only cuts power to the heating element; the plug and cord stay live, and a nudge restarts heating. Switch off at the wall and unplug as well.
What should I do if I think I left the iron on at home?
Cut the power remotely if the iron is on a smart plug, otherwise ask a neighbour or keyholder to unplug it. Call 999 only if someone reports smoke, an alarm or a burning smell. The step-by-step list above covers what to check when you get home.
Is it safe to leave an iron on its heel?
Safer than face down, and it is how an iron should rest between garments. It is not a substitute for switching off: London Fire Brigade advises switching irons off as soon as you leave the room and unplugging them when not in use.
Can I put an iron on a smart plug?
Yes, if the plug is rated for the load, and it gives you a way to cut the power from your phone. Compare the plug’s rating with the iron’s wattage first; see the 13A note in the section on what to do if you think you left the iron on.
