This is a research-based review. We have not tested this model ourselves: it brings together the Amazon UK listing, retailer specifications and patterns in verified owner reviews at Amazon UK, compared against the other Russell Hobbs irons we cover.

Verdict: the Russell Hobbs Supreme Steam 23060 is still a sensible cheap iron for light, occasional ironing. It has 2400W, 40g/min of continuous steam, a 110g shot and a 300ml tank, a stainless steel soleplate, vertical steam and self-clean, and it is one of the most-reviewed irons on Amazon UK. Its weak points are modest steam, a short 2m cord, no auto shut-off listed and some owners reporting it failing within months. For a little more, the Steam Glide Pro 20562 gives you far more steam and a ceramic soleplate, and the Powersteam Ultra 20630 is our best steam iron overall.

The Supreme Steam 23060 has been on sale for the best part of a decade, and it is still one of the cheapest full-size steam irons from a major brand at Amazon UK. It sits at the bottom of the Russell Hobbs range, below the Steam Glide, Titanium Carbide and Powersteam models. This review replaces our older write-up with current specifications, what owners report now, and how it compares with the Russell Hobbs irons around it.

Russell Hobbs sells several similar-looking Supreme Steam irons. The 23060 is the 2400W model with a stainless steel soleplate; the 2600W Supreme Steam 23260 is a different iron. Check the model code if you want the one described here.

Russell Hobbs Supreme Steam 23060: Reviewed

  • Power: 2400W
  • Continuous steam: 40g/min
  • Steam shot: 110g/min
  • Tank: 300ml
  • Soleplate: Stainless steel
  • Anti-scale: Self-clean function
  • Extras: Vertical steam, spray, anti-drip
  • Auto shut-off: Not listed
  • Power cord: 2m

Steam and crease removal. 40g/min of continuous steam and a 110g shot are modest by today’s standards: the cheaper Steam Glide Pro manages 70g/min and a 210g shot. For everyday cotton shirts, school uniform and casual wear that is enough, and the 2400W element heats up quickly. Owner reviews are split on steam: many say it steams well and heats fast, while a noticeable minority find the steam output weak, especially after a few months. If you iron thick cotton, linen or bedding every week, you will notice the difference with a stronger iron.

The soleplate. The stainless steel soleplate glides well and is easy to wipe clean. It lacks the coatings and precision tips of more expensive irons, but stainless steel is durable and does not chip like some cheap ceramic coatings.

Tank and controls. The 300ml tank is a good size for the price and is easy to fill. Controls are a simple temperature dial, a steam setting, spray and shot buttons. There is vertical steam for hanging shirts and curtains, and an anti-drip system for lower temperatures.

Scale and hard water. The 23060 has a self-clean function that flushes loose scale out through the soleplate, but no anti-calc cartridge or scale collector. In hard-water areas, run self-clean regularly and consider mixing tap water with distilled water. See our hard water guide for irons that cope better.

Weak points. The 2m cord is the most common complaint in owner reviews: it is short if your socket is not close to the board. No auto shut-off is listed for the 23060, so switch it off at the plug. Durability is the other recurring theme: Amazon’s summary of owner reviews notes reports of the iron breaking within about six months, alongside many owners who have used one for years.

Buying it now. The 23060 is in stock at Amazon UK, sold by Amazon. It is usually priced close to the Steam Glide Pro 20562, so compare the two on the day before you buy.

Pros

  • Very cheap for a big-brand iron
  • Huge owner track record
  • Stainless steel soleplate
  • 300ml tank
  • Vertical steam and self-clean
Cons

  • Modest 40g/min steam and 110g shot
  • Short 2m cord
  • No auto shut-off listed
  • Some owners report early failures
  • No anti-calc cartridge

Our verdict: Light, occasional ironing on a tight budget.

The 23060 is the simplest and usually the cheapest of the four. The Steam Glide Pro 20562 costs a little more and almost doubles the steam, so for most people it is the better buy. The Titanium Carbide 27090 is the one to pick in a hard-water area. The Powersteam Ultra 20630 adds 3100W and a 3m cord; it is our best steam iron overall. See the full range in our Russell Hobbs irons guide.

Getting the best from the 23060

  • Let it heat fully before using steam. Steaming on a low setting or before the light goes out is the most common cause of drips.
  • Run self-clean regularly, monthly in hard-water areas. Fill the tank, heat to max, unplug and hold the iron over a sink while pressing self-clean. Full steps in how to descale a steam iron.
  • Empty the tank after each session to slow scale build-up.
  • Use an extension lead with care if the 2m cord does not reach: a heavy-duty, fully unwound lead rated for 13A.
  • Switch it off at the plug when you finish. No auto shut-off is listed for this model.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Russell Hobbs Supreme Steam 23060 any good?

Yes, for light, occasional ironing on a tight budget. It has 2400W, 40g/min of steam, a 110g shot and a 300ml tank. If you iron a lot or tackle thick cotton and linen, a stronger iron such as the Russell Hobbs Steam Glide Pro 20562 is worth the small extra cost.

Does the Russell Hobbs 23060 have auto shut-off?

No auto shut-off is listed for the 23060, and Currys lists it as “No”. Switch it off at the plug when you finish. The 2600W Supreme Steam 23260 is a different iron.

How do you use self-clean on the Russell Hobbs 23060?

Fill the tank, heat the iron to its highest setting, then unplug it and hold it over a sink with the soleplate pointing down while pressing the self-clean button. Hot water and loose scale flush out through the soleplate. Let it cool and wipe the soleplate.

Why is my Russell Hobbs iron leaking water?

Usually because steam was used before the iron was fully hot, or at too low a temperature setting. Scale build-up can also cause spitting. Wait for the heat light, use steam only on the higher settings and run self-clean regularly.

How long is the cord on the Russell Hobbs 23060?

2m. Owners often mention it as too short, so check how far your socket is from your ironing board.

What is the difference between the Russell Hobbs 23060 and the Steam Glide Pro 20562?

The Steam Glide Pro has 2600W, 70g/min of continuous steam and a 210g shot against the 23060’s 2400W, 40g/min and 110g, and a ceramic rather than stainless steel soleplate. Both have 300ml tanks.
